I picked up this painting today. My husband truly I picked up this painting today. My husband truly cannot understand why I spent this kind of money on THIS! But it called to me.

Painted by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo during her dark times.

Born with polio and paralysed by a bus accident left her unable to pursue many activities, leaving her to pour her emotions through her art.

The thorn necklace is the focal point, showing the shackles she was bound in. Yet it shows she was overcoming her restrictions - the thorns only cover her upper body.

One of her distinct features in this self portrait is her unibrow which She did have to protect her third eye.

The background is her ethnic Mexican nature which she considers a part of her.

Though probably not the most appealing to many, the symbolism is remarkable.

Notice the butterflies on her hair
And around her head
Butterflies have a very short life, but a joyful one
They embody beauty and freedom.
Whilst the rest of her has difficulty in moving, her mind is free to fly.

The black cat was mentioned in one of her books. If I’m not mistaken, it had to do with survival that she had nine lives that she was untouchable, hence the black colour in the cat.

Not sure if she personally was a feline lover or had pets. Monkeys were everywhere in Mexico that depicts her culture. Also, where she spent most of her time.

The monkey, picking at her shackles could mean that eventually, she’s allowing a breakthrough her own culture.

In the end, it is her own culture that will give her the freedom out of the shackles.

This painting is today part of the Jack Murray collection and is often displayed in museums.

I’m sure you remember my hostess cabinet or butl I’m sure you remember my hostess cabinet or butlers pantry if you prefer.
I decided I wanted to store more dishes - ni I don’t buy anymore - but some are too heavy for the drawers. I decided this was the best area so I have another three cubbies now.
That’s what I love about modular pieces of furniture, you can readjust them to suit your needs.
I’ll share some more pics soon!
