Throughout watching videos and reading blogs and listening to podcasts, you will find many different terms to represent various cleaning tasks. Sometimes we may use these words interchangeably, or we may mean different things when we say them.
The Pyramid of Cleaning that we have created, visually exemplifies the thoroughness and intensity of each task. And provided below, is our definition of each term as a reference.
CHECK | Inspect the highlighted area and proceed to tidy or clean only if needed. |
TIDY | Quickly neaten the space, and return things to where they belong. |
DUST | Use a duster or dry cloth to clean surfaces. |
WIPE | Use a wet cloth to clean the highlighted area. |
CLEAN | Remove dirt from surfaces, including the floors. |
WASH | Wet cleaning for outdoors, bathrooms and certain indoor spaces such as the kitchen. |
DECLUTTER | Remove unnecessary items to donate, recycle or throw away. |
ORGANISE | Corral like items correctly in containers. |
DEEP CLEAN | Take everything out, wipe, declutter and reorganise. |
